Chorus Motors plc has invented and developed improved AC induction motor/drive systems for a wide variety of applications. They include:
- The new Chorus® Meshcon™ Motor, a high-phase-order motor/drive system that offers ten times the startup or acceleration torque of a conventional motor and drive of the same rated horsepower and base speed
- The Chorus Star™ Motor, which can achieve much higher torque densities than a traditional 3-phase motor, but with no cost penalty
- The Chorus WheelTug® powered nosewheel, an integrated aircraft motor/drive system which will enable commercial aircraft to move around airports without using their jet engines
- The Chorus® for Cars serial hybrid solution, enables vehicles to surpass conventional vehicles on cost, fuel efficiency and overall performance using Chorus electric drives powered by a single-speed internal combustion engine
"The new Chorus Meshcon motor's "mesh-connected" winding is unique...The inverter control works like a virtual transmission, delivering big starting torque while efficiently providing strong cruising torque at all other times in a smaller, lighter, cheaper package...These characteristics make it ideally suited to serial hybrid cars...."
--- MOTOR TREND, January 2009
Each new technology offers specific advantages. The Chorus Meshcon system provides high torque at low speeds without compromising high-speed operation and performance, enabling the use of smaller, lighter, and less expensive motors and drives for equivalent performance.
Potential Meshcon applications include starter-generators, conveyors, locomotives, cargo handling equipment, hoists, printing presses, or any application requiring large startup torques and smaller high-speed loads.
The basic Chorus Star Motor system uses high-phase-order, concentrated windings that allow the beneficial use of harmonics (temporal, spatial, and overload) to enhance the main drive waveform and can thus achieve much higher torque densities than a 3-phase motor, at no cost penalty.
Both Chorus Meshcon and Chorus Star are motor/drive combinations, harnessing the specific system benefits of harmonic drive. They are ideal for traction applications at sizes from less than 1 hp ranging up to megawatt systems, with each version offering a range of competitive advantages depending on the specific size and application.
For a brief overview of the Chorus Meshcon technology, see the Executive Summary. More complete technical information on both Meshcon and Star can be found in the Technology section of this site. We especially recommend viewing the Chorus Meshcon Technical Show as an explanation of the technology. For more information on the Chorus WheelTug powered nosewheel or Chorus® for Cars, contact us.
